The meeting was called to order at 6:40 p.m. and turned immediately over to Val Muchowski. Val introduced herself and had everyone in the room introduce themselves. Val described the purpose of the meeting, which was candidate training, especially in fundraising.

The candidates were Madelin Holtkamp (school finances) and Tony Orth (Brooke Trails). Val explained that while nobody wants to do fundraising, it’s a necessity for any candidate for public office.She described several techniques, including her famous passing the hat. But she stressed the importance of stating your case when fundraising and then keeping quiet to give the target time to think and make an offer.

Val also mentioned that candidates should have handouts, so that people attending an event or making a contribution feel that they have been given something as well.

The meeting was then turned over to Katarzyna Rolzinski, who discussed the psychology of what isn’t said and described a formula of capacity + relationship + interest In other news, for the 2010 Platform Convention of the California Democratic Party, the party is holding meetings and taking testimony on the Democratic platform.
